YOUNG EXPLORERS AND SCIENTISTS GROW AT LICEO FILZI WITH PROJECT RESET

A trip to Svalbard Islands looking for new relationships between education and scientific research.
By Matteo Cattadori*, Project co-ordinator teacher
“To reconstruct the atmosphere of the epic scientific polar exploration expeditions of the last century. To seek new forms of divulgation for earth sciences. These are some of the objectives of project RESEt (Research and Education Experience Svalbard www.resetsvalbard.it) put together by a class from Liceo Fabio Filzi, a Human Sciences High school in Rovereto, Trento. Through this project, they will become the first Italian school class to undertake a study trip to the Svalbard Islands, the closest permanent settlement to the North Pole. On July 20, 2016, the class departed for Svalbard for a two-weeks study programme. The program of the expedition was developed in collaboration with CNR, the Italian National Research Council.
The group consists of all students (18 female and two male) from a fourth-year class, coordinated by their teacher, Prof. Cattadori, who specialiases in the creation of educational projects in Polar Sciences. RESEt was started two years ago with the aim of creating a three-year in-depth study of issues related to climate change that will be the key topic of fifth-year classes. The main idea is to visit international research stations that operate in this area and get to know methods and techniques of their work of scientific investigation also through the running of small experiments and measurement collection on site.
During the project the students also deal with all aspects of communication, as well as the gathering of the substantial finances necessary for the projects’ success. The fund-sourcing phase took off in March 2015 and allowed the students to gather the necessary resources. This was made possible by running a crowdfunding campaign on SchoolRaising, that through an action of awareness led to financial contributions from about 20 companies and associations.
Also the students have activated small-scale collaborations with the University of Trento and the University Centre in Svalbard; as well as attracting expressions of interest from international bodies such as polar disclosure PEI (Polar International Educator), APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists).”
Note by Lorella Rigonat and Sandro Sutti, GLOBE ITALY CC
Recently prof. Cattadori was certified Globe Teacher, accordingly Liceo Filzi has entered the national network of GLOBE ITALY schools. Thank to that, at the end of the expedition some experimental data collected by the class will be entered in the GLOBE Database.
